Do recent social connections matter on Instagram?
A conversation at work recently got me thinking about how people build and change their online networks, someone mentioned that the newest accounts a person follows can sometimes reveal what they are currently focused on, whether it’s a new hobby, industry news, entertainment, or personal projects, at first I dismissed the idea, but after looking through my own social media activity, I noticed there was some truth to it, the accounts I connected with over the past few months reflected interests that weren’t even on my radar a year ago, of course, some follows happen on impulse and mean very little, which makes the whole topic more interesting, do recent social connections genuinely show where a person’s attention is going, or do they create a misleading picture of their actual interests?
One evening I was reorganizing my social media after realizing my feed felt too noisy and unfocused, so I started unfollowing accounts pretty aggressively without thinking much, the next day I actually regretted removing a couple of pages that I used for daily inspiration, but I couldn’t remember their exact names anymore, while trying to figure out how to track my recent changes, recentlyfollowed during my search, It helped me understand how people keep better control over their follow activity, and now I take a slower approach before making big cleanups.
