MOUNTAIN ADVENTURE TOURS
Counselor in Training Program

A M.A.T. tradition, more than ever integral to our culture and mission of cultivating confident, capable young leaders.

The Counselor in Training (C.I.T.) program is an integral part of Mountain Adventure Tours culture and a vital way we cultivate the next generation of camp leaders — and leaders in their own right, long after summer ends.

Many of our strongest, most enthusiastic counselors began their journey as C.I.T.s, and this program plays an important role in maintaining the supportive and high-quality camp experience families expect from M.A.T. As M.A.T. has grown, so has the C.I.T. program—leading us to formalize training and placement to ensure C.I.T.s are well-prepared for the responsibility of the role.

C.I.T. training is required for all first-year participants. In 2026, we are offering two separate two-day training sessions — one in June and one in July — that introduce campers to leadership skills, teamwork, and the responsibilities of supporting counselors and younger campers. Participants must successfully complete both a short written evaluation and a hands-on assessment to ensure they are ready to step into a leadership role safely and responsibly.

After registering for a C.I.T. training session, families should complete a short form (see below) to indicate their child’s availability for the summer. Please note that availability helps us with planning but does not guarantee placement in a camp week.

Once training is complete and evaluations are finished, we will work to place first-year C.I.T.s into camp sessions based on availability, enrollment, and staffing needs. Second-year C.I.T.s who have previously completed training and served as C.I.T.s are given priority for placement.

This structure allows us to support our counselors, keep campers safe, and offer C.I.T.s meaningful leadership experiences. Our goal is to help young leaders grow confidence, responsibility, and pride—while continuing to strengthen the M.A.T. community and culture.
